15 Taper Fade Haircuts I Tried This Year
Fifteen taper fades across a year and four barbers, with an honest verdict on each — including the two that were wrong on the day and the one that taught me to stop saying "short on the sides".

Four barbers, fifteen cuts, one year. A few of these I would book again immediately and two were wrong before I left the chair. The pattern that emerged had nothing to do with the barbers.
How I Picked These
I paid for all fifteen at four shops. I logged what I asked for, what I got, how long it held, and how it looked at week three. The verdicts come from those notes.
The 15 Cuts I Tried
1. Low Taper, Scissor Finish
The best of the year. Three and a half weeks before it looked untidy. Soft, and it grew out invisibly.
2. High Skin Fade
Sharp on day one, severe by week two. Wrong for my long face — it made it longer.
3. Mid Taper with a Textured Crop
Consistently good. The version I default to when I have no opinion.
4. "Short on the Sides" — Barber One
Came out a 1 all over. My fault entirely. This is the cut that taught me to say numbers.
5. The Same Sentence at Four Shops
"A 1 at the bottom into a 3 at the temple." Four near-identical cuts. The single most useful thing I learned.
6. Low Drop Fade
Better than I expected. The curve suited the back of my head, which is flatter than I realised.
7. Burst Fade with a Long Nape
Fun for a month. Grew out awkwardly because the unfaded back caught up faster than the arc.
8. Low Taper with a Blocked Neckline
Sharp for five days, then a visible line. Tapered nape from now on.
9. Mid Taper with a Beard Blend
Excellent, and entirely down to the barber. The join is a skill, not a request.
10. Skin Taper on a Four-Week Gap
Stubble filled the fade in five days. Skin needs fortnightly or do not bother.
11. Low Taper with a Line-Up
Crisp for a week, fuzzy after. Worth it before an event, not as routine.
12. Mid Taper, Grown Out Six Weeks
Deliberately left. Looked better at four weeks than at one.
13. Low Taper with More Length on Top
Four inches up top. Best contrast of the year, but forty seconds of styling every morning.
14. Mid Taper in Summer
Cooler, and the sweat showed less than with length. Practical rather than exciting.
15. Back to the Low Scissor Taper
Ended the year where I started. That is the answer for me.
What I Would Do Differently
Say guard numbers from the first appointment, not the eighth.
Stop asking for a skin finish I have no intention of maintaining fortnightly.
Take a photo of the back after a good cut. Describing a drop fade twice never worked; showing it once did.
What Worked Best
Low taper, scissor finish, tapered neckline, two inches on top. Three and a half weeks of wear and it never once looked like it was growing out badly.
FAQ
Which lasted best? The low taper with a scissor finish — three and a half weeks.
What changed the results most? Guard numbers instead of adjectives.
Would I get a high fade again? Not on a long face. It lengthened it further.
Final Thoughts
A year of experiments and the conclusion was a sentence, not a style: give the guard numbers and the fade height, and four different barbers will hand you the same cut.
