Fine and Slippery Hair

Clean hair will not hold a fishtail. A flat cuticle with no sebum on it gives the crossings nothing to grip, and the braid unwinds from the bottom up.

Second day hair is the right condition. Natural oil raises friction between strands, and friction is the only force holding a loose fishtail together.

How to Pancake a Mermaid Braid

Elastic on before you start. Widening releases tension, so an unsecured braid slackens faster than you can pull it out.

Bottom to top. Every crossed piece is anchored by the ones above and below it, so widening the lowest one leaves the tension above intact. Starting at the top drops slack the whole way down.

Sideways, never downward. Pulling out to the side moves hair from the centre of the braid to its edge, which is the mechanism. Pulling down just drags the crossing out of shape.

Finish one side, then the other. Alternating produces a braid noticeably wider on one side, and it is visible from every angle.

Stop before gaps open. Once you can see through the braid you have taken more slack than it contained, and only rebraiding puts it back.

Wave the hair before you braid it. A bent strand touches its neighbours at several points instead of running parallel to them, which raises grip through the whole braid.

Boho braids come with their own waves. The loose pieces left out are curly human or synthetic hair, and they are the entire reason the style reads soft rather than severe.

Grow out is the real clock on an install. Hair adds roughly half an inch a month, so by six weeks the braid is hanging from about three quarters of an inch of loose new growth with nothing supporting it at the base.

If it needs to look right for one evening, an install is an expensive way to get there.

Then be honest about which part of the photograph you actually want. The scale pattern only comes from crossing thin slivers, so boho braids will never produce it, however long they are. The soft wavy length is the reverse, and a fishtail on shoulder length hair will never reach it without clip ins.
